*Discussion*

Mairéad raised the issue of the current design of the VidMid website and what materials, in terms of introductory and explanatory material, should be added to the site specific to VoD, or whether the page should be split into 2, one each for VC and VoD.

[AI] Steve and Mairéad will evaluate web page needs and organization, and provide an analysis regarding issues and possible solutions to the list.

A Sun server donated to Internet2 has been set up at the University of Tennessee. The gift will be acknowledged on the web site. There is also a plan to use the server to demonstrate some mockups at the NMI/DRM workshop in August. Use of the server is available to projects of the group; suggestions on possible uses are welcome.

The NMI/DRM workshop planning committee will have its first meeting next week. The workshop is tentatively set for August or September. The workshop will explore emerging middleware, particularly directory issues and the role they may play as a foundation for DRM in research and education. Items for the workshop include a proposal to develop a rights metadata core and an invitation to participate in that effort. Also proposed is a forum for middleware and content management people working on access and policy issues. An article on Federated DRM and DRM in general, authored by Mairéad, Grace, John McNair, Dave Kuhlman, William Rhodes and Ron Tipton, will be coming out in mid-June on DLib.org.

[AI] Mairéad will provide an update on the workshop after the planning meeting.

Federated DRM is becoming more visible within Internet2 and is seen as an important initiative. If the information is available, Mairéad hopes to have an update on prototypes/demos for FDRM on the next call.

During the writing of the VoD/directory white paper, the need for some object class development emerged from taking scenarios regarding the role of directories in video on demand and decomposing them into message flows. There is interest in this development by ResearchChannel to formalize the metadata for content and expose that in the directory space. The desire is to move ahead quickly to draft directory object class(es) and attributes so they can be used for the Lighthouse Project, which is a collaboration to house content from museums and other scholarly sources in a directory space for searching by K-12 students and teachers. The goal is a demonstration by the Fall Internet2 meeting October 27-30 in Los Angeles. The directory white paper is available at http://middleware.internet2.edu/video/.

[AI] Jim will provide a description of the Directory Object project and act as project lead.

A new ViDe working group is creating a video-streaming cookbook with an approximate target date of January 2003. Chris Hodge from U. Tennessee and Mike Estler from Georgia Tech are leading this effort. The cookbook will touch on middleware issues such as authentication, authorization, DRM etc. for video assets. There will be opportunities to contribute to the cookbook on these issues.

ViDe has a new structure for membership. Anyone taking part in a ViDe working group is considered a member of ViDe. Since VidMid is a joint project between Internet2 and ViDe, everyone involved is considered a ViDe member.
