Tyler: Study Group 16 meeting is about a week and half away. commObject has gotten very good feedback so the expectation is the meeting will go well. There is a desire to ensure that NMI community has the opportunity to comment on this as it moves forward. Tyler will forward a link to Steve who'll put it on the web site and forward the information to the list.
A way to trigger a SAML communication within H.235 has been identified. Normally ITU won't recognize something unless it's from a standards body such as the IETF, ITU etc. Tyler needs someone to write up a brief description that describes what SAML is, what OASIS is, and their standards process. He would like to circulate to SG16 to build support. Steve volunteered to draft an initial version for review.
General questions: Is H.323 zone included? As the process has progressed it has turned out that there are other ways to deal with the issues that H.323 zone was being considered for. Have there been substantive changes since the April draft? There have been some corrections. The text has changed rather significantly, however. All references to NMI, Internet2 and ViDe have been excised. A paragraph explaining how OID's have changed will be needed.
The "ViDe.Net: Middleware for Scalable Video Services for Research and Higher Education" project, is a collaboration involving Jill Gemmill (UAB), Samir Chatterjee (CGU), Tyler Johnson (UNC), RADVISION and Egon Verharen (SURFnet). The project will last two years and will produce a videoconferencing application directory (based on CommObject) and management for test-bed activities/results propagation. The link to the NSF web site describing the project is: http://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/servlet/showaward?award=0222710
The project has identified 4 goals. – 1) develop the NMI Release 1 communications object class for use in H.323, SIP, MPEG2, VRVS and Access Grid implementations 2) develop a framework for specification of videoconferencing security requirements 3) develop a test-bed to deploy and test middleware-ware, inter-operable videoconferencing services and 4) disseminate the results through conferences, publications including a Video Middleware Cookbook.
Tomorrow is the official kick-off meeting for all project partners to fine tune deliverables and talk about the process. So by the next VidMid call we may be able to discuss how results from that project will flow over into VidMid.
Internet2 Fall Member Meeting: The program is available at: http://www.internet2.edu/activities/php/agenda.php?session_event_id=122
There are two VidMid sessions and all members of the group are invited to both.
1) Monday October 28th 8:00AM - 9:45 AM. Video Middleware Working Group: In
this closed meeting the progress of the VidMid-VC Authentication/Authorization
working group will be discussed. Especially the inter-realm authentication and
authorization (attributes and credentials) flows in SIP and H.323 will be worked
out further, as well as the necessary infrastructure components, such as conferencing
endpoints and servers, authentication servers and attribute authorities and
their roles. Please RSVP to Egon if you plan on attending this session.
2) October 30th 8:45AM -10:00 AM. Advanced Applications-Video: Open Meeting.
VidMid Videoconferencing Deliverables: Nadim El-Khoury, University of North
Carolina, Chapel Hill, Jill Gemmill, University of Alabama, Birmingham, Jon
Peterson, NeuStar, Egon Verharen, SURFnet. This session will include a report
on the several deliverables from the group, such as authentication and authorization
flows, directory and object class papers and standards, and naming and resource
discovery.
NMI release 2 is scheduled for October 25, 2002. Shibboleth will be part of the release, either a late beta or early version 1.
Jon Peterson and Doug Sicker are leading the writing of an Internet draft to cover issues that have been part of the VidMid-VC Authn/z discussions. It is planned to be part of the NMI release.
There is a need for an overview document of Authn/z in videoconferencing. It may be possible to have one for the release next April.
Call schedule: There will be a call in two weeks on October 21, 2002 to cover
any issues before the fall member meeting. We can have a call the Monday after
the member meeting to give readout on the fall meeting. That leaves four more
meetings left in 2002 after the Internet2 Fall Member meeting. Nov. 4, Nov 18,
Dec 2, Dec. 16. We'll plan on this and modify as needed.
