*Discussion*
Direction of VidMid VC work:
The scope of work was discussed. Focusing on how to do presence across a federation
is reasonable and there is more infrastructure available to help solve problems
encountered.
The role of LDAP would also have to be determined. The LDAP infrastructure by itself is not adequate to enable global presence management and should be regarded as a predetermined solution. Rather than storing the presence information it could point to where the presence information is located. Information might be put in an LDAP directory among other places, particularly for a federation specific application.
The use of the term presence is also not clearly defined. There are at least
two kinds of presence that been blurred together:
1. Instant messaging presence
2. Management of contact and acceptance modes by the user. For a given time,
who can contact me, what modes of contact I'll accept, and what capabilities
I have, and where to direct all other communication.
A SIP proxy could handle the second type, but that might create difficulty in using the information outside of SIP. You might want to locate it outside the operational location so other applications can be supported with the information.
Steve will check with Nadim on the status of the group work plan
Jill provided a brief status update on the inter-organizational authorization work. Currently there is no interface between tools for inter-realm authorization and the protocols, as they exist. There should be authenticating clients by fall. SIP or H.323 has never used or written code to manage certificates. There are plans to discuss this at the fall meeting by reviewing the security components of the protocols and drivers for more vendor development in this area.
