VidMid-VC Conference Call - October 18, 2004

*Attendees*
Tyler Johnson, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (Stand-in Chair)
Paul Hill, MIT
Jill Gemmill, University of Alabama at Birmingham
Steve Olshansky, Internet2
Lisa Hogeboom, Internet2
Jessica Bibbee, Internet2 (scribe)

*Action Items*
[AI] {Group} should continue to find ways to engage the general community; work on developing use cases that capture the infrastructural implications surrounding federated AuthN and AuthR issues and thus encourage and compel broader involvement (perhaps create a video demo to show an audience, etc.)

[AI] {Nadim} will lead the drafting of a letter to MACE regarding federated AuthN and AuthR in support of real-time communication tools, focusing on the work of VidMid-VC to date, and proposing that MACE use this as a foundation to advance and endorse a recommended common approach for use by other areas within Internet2 working on communication applications.

[AI] {Tyler} will send Ken Klingenstein a draft description of bid specifications and process.

*Discussion*
The attendance at the Fall I2MM BoF (http://events.internet2.edu/2004/fall-mm/) was good (around 30 attendees), demonstrating growing interest in security and identity management issues related to videoconferencing and other collaborative tools. SIP is approaching federated AuthN and AuthR issues from many angles. [AI] {Group} should continue to find ways to engage the general community; work on developing use cases that capture the infrastructural implications surrounding federated AuthN and AuthR issues and thus encourage and compel broader involvement (perhaps create a video demo to show an audience, etc.)

Currently, there are no open source applications that look attractive for modification to meet the AuthN/AuthR requirements the groups sees as most pressing. This might be a good time to invest efforts into some design and potentially even coding work; toward creating a security model prototype to fit today’s needs and bring it closer to deployment.

As MACE and its respective working groups deal with the whole realm of AuthN and
AuthR issues, {Group} will ask MACE to endorse and distribute this baseline idea of coordinating efforts amongst the various groups working on federated AuthN and AuthR issues surrounding communication applications. In this way, duplication of efforts will be avoided, and there will be a more cohesive effort from the community.

At the I2 Digital Video Initiative (DVI) meeting held at the Fall member meeting
http://dv.internet2.edu/2004/fall/agenda.html, Tyler presented the idea of a campus bid package (specification). The goal of the proposed bid package is to provide a recommended set of specifications and criteria for organizations to use if they wish in creating collaborative application RFIs/RFPs. The aim is communicating to interested vendors in a clear and uniform way the requirements related to federated AuthN/Z as developed under the Internet2 Middleware Initiative. As envisioned, this could also provide clear criteria by which to evaluate RFI/RFP responses.

The bid package is not intended to be mandatory in any sense, but is intended for those organizations that wish to take advantage of this and find it useful. Continued campus and community interest in these topics as expressed to vendors in RFIs/RFPs are another incentive for vendors to include support for these technologies in their product and service offerings. This recommendation would be sent to the respective Internet2 Area Director(s) for dissemination through the various working groups. [AI] {Tyler} will send Ken Klingenstein a draft description of bid specifications and process.

The next NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) release is anticipated in early December. Details will be available on the NMI-EDIT site http://www.nmi-edit.org/.

The next revision of the H.350 Cookbook will be ready in early December in both web edition and paper edition, and will be included in the upcoming NMI release. The H.350 Cookbook will have an ISBN that will be available for the public to order a hard copy of the web version from any bookseller of their choice or direct from the publisher. Details at http://lab.ac.uab.edu/vnet/

The next call will be on Monday, November 1, 2004 at 11:00am ET.
