*Subgroups Update*

Authn/z: Call last Tuesday. Work is progressing in editing a high level Interim VC Flow Diagram. It was decided that the initial goal does not include native mode authentication or authorization in either SIP or H.323 but use the protocols, as they are operational today. Simple point-to-point connections to demonstrate how this could work are the initial goal. Next steps include further modifying the diagram and providing annotation to explicitly outline the flows.

The NMI release 2 is tentatively scheduled for October 27, 2002. This release will include the ViDe.net test bed, which is the working demonstration model of commObject.

commObject has been submitted to the ITU. The draft has been referred to several ITU subcommittees. It is not clear exactly which subcommittees. [AI] 1-July-02 (Tyler) Research the ITU subcommittees that the commObject draft has been distributed to.

H.323 Annex K. It is not clear what the current ratification status of Annex K is.

Tyler introduced the concept of utilizing the support Radvision has for annex D, in their current gatekeeper, for a possible short-term demonstration project. The idea is to implement Annex D user id password security between endpoints and a gatekeeper and then implement Shibboleth between gatekeepers. A web-based federated administration model could serve as an interim compromise that could build on an existing strategy and be implemented easily by a gatekeeper manufacturer. [AI] 1-July-02 (Tyler) Relay information from Radvision, about available hooks in Annex D.

There was a discussion regarding how to proceed with a web-based application to encode a proof of concept. The issue is whether to locate web based functions of video conferencing and Shibboleth enable them or trying to web enable existing video conferencing applications. The consensus is that it is preferable to look for web-based functions. Another suggestion was to use Shibboleth in ViDe.net for inter-realm authentication of gatekeeper management. It would provide validation that the University X you were trusting was actually University X. The group will continue to explore issues relating to a web based approach. [AI] 1-July-02 (All) issues, pluses, minuses of going forward with a web services based approach for video conferencing.

In the original commObject there was going to be an object class called h323zone. Which was going to describe gatekeepers and networks of endpoints. It was pulled from the NMI R.1 release to make the deadline. Now that commObject is being considered by the ITU, h323zone should be completed in a draft form by September. The next call will be dedicated to discussing the h323zone specification.
