*Discussion*
The group further discussed naming and recursive entitlement sets. The definition
of entitlement falls within the WG’s charter. It has been decided that
the definition of permission will be the functionality manipulated inside Signet.
And, a role is what will be created or derived. Entitlement will be replaced
with permission in WG documents. Will permissions belong inside eduPerson entitlements?
Confusion arises since two MACE groups are using the same term with only partial
agreement on the definition. For Signet’s purposes permission will define
entitlement or a group of entitlements being expressed as an entitlement. The
secondary aspect of naming will consist not only of entitlements but also functions
and limits to schema.
Signet is divided into subsystems and each subsystem establishes a domain of ownership control and meaning. In addition to establishing subsystems within Signet, a two level naming hierarchy for entitlements will be used. Ideally, Signet will have a few sub-domains providing the application with enough flexibility to accommodate campuses with distributed computing environments and limited central administration. In making Signet function using permissions, the issues of what are entitlements and how do permissions map into eduPerson entitlements become two distinct issues.
Initial development of the User Interface (UI) is underway. The UI will be flexible enough to support both complex and simple structures by utilizing a collapsible navigator hierarchy. The UI will be user oriented thereby making the semantic issues of privilege, entitlement and permission transparent to the user. Browser capability for the UI will focus on current browser technology. Usability and design reviews from other institutions will be developed.
The Signet WG can provide a detailed design review, but a user design review will require input from other institutions. It was agreed that the Signet application should be tested with metadata. In seeking early adopters for Signet the first phase will be to define institutions’ current privileges. The second phase will be to solicit beta institutions. The WG’s goal is to have the UI developed in time for the I2 Fall Member Meeting.
