Use Cases

Rev. 15-Feb-2006

More to come...

The Early Adopters Signet/Grouper Deployment Workshop (March 20-22) will serve to capture real-world examples, and they will be presented here in length.

Suggestions for use cases are much welcomed; please direct your comments here.

This page will present use cases that typify the current challenges facing higher ed, and how Signet can be put to work on a campus to address these issues.

  • "Today's world is quickly switching over from a 9-5 paper-logged era to one with 24-7 online needs, but current practice isn't keeping pace. I need a way to let my researchers access departmental servers on nights and weekends, and let them run simulations on super-computing facilities offered by our partner."

  • "It's a challenge to control access across departments, while furthermore tracking who has permission to do what. My new assistant needs access to Student System records, as well as to the enterprise Reporting environment for all incoming student records."

  • "Institutions must multi-task to meet the needs of each department, yet they must also maintain a holistic approach, in order to operate as a single entity. A Law School events planner needs the same level of access to both the institutional Calendar and Facilities services to schedule events on campus."

  • While policy is explored at length, it is the enforcement of that policy that actually determines the policy at an institution. All departmental administrators can approve purchases up to limits determined their department, but only after they have received Financial Policy training.
