Privilege Management & Your Institution
Rev. 14-Feb-2006
Signet is a new member of the family of Internet2 middleware
designed to address challenges of authentication and authorization
of services between systems and across campuses. For an institution,
it offers a specific model of control – central facilities
supporting distributed privilege management, which can enable
any pattern of use – from strong centralized control to
highly decentralized use. It scales from managing privileges
for large enterprise systems to small projects or departmental
use.
Because of its flexibility, Signet can be introduced at an
institution in several different ways. One of its strengths
is that it brings together privilege information about a user
from diverse sources; its benefits accrue as more and more
systems use it. But until Signet gains broader use, it is more
likely that Signet will be applied to individual privilege
management challenges.
More to come...
This page will track the ways in which Signet can be introduced
at your site, based on experiences at other institutions. It
will address policy concerns and issues of institutional commitment
to the use of, and possible contributions to, Signet and related
middleware.
