During the previous call, it was suggested that the survey include questions directed at Virtual Organizations (VOs) and grid environments. Further definition of VOs is required for the survey. It was suggested to include student-interest clubs, organizations with virtual members or organizations with no enterprise source for membership within the definition of VO. Other characteristics of VOs may include a large group with a distributed population and no single source for the group’s population. From an architecture perspective, does the VO by definition operate inter-domain? Is the VO using grid-like software for multiple organizations? Or, is the VO using Globus? It was suggested that the definition of VO remain consistent with a collection of individuals who gather around a specific interest or a collaborative group that does not require that the individual members originate from a single institution. So, we cannot rely on a single institution’s directory service to contain all the members of the VO in its database. What types of VO issues are we attempting to identify with the survey? Potential issues include VO’s authentication of international members and, differences between VOs and campus e-mail efforts. It was decided that further definition would be sought by review of the UAB grant.

Survey drafts will be kept on the WG’s website for comment.
