Comments to the survey: The group further discussed potential survey methods to increase responses. Once the survey is finalized, then it will be converted to PHP. E-mail auto-reply was also discussed as a survey method. The group identified potential trial participants for the survey from the University of Alabama, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Chicago. The survey will be distributed through the mw-announce list and the institutional liaison list. The e-mail administrators’ list developed by Mark Peopping will be used to solicit responses from e-mail administrators. It was decided to request that respondents identify general descriptive attributes of their respective institutions along with their position/function within the institution.

Comments to the domain model diagram: Once the model has been updated the group will decide to possibly use different authentication methods for posting a message to the list via an e-mail client versus posting a message to this list via logging into a web application. The user authentication is a generic concept. Each user interface has an authentication requirement. The domain model will include an authentication interaction that correlates to the message submission. User authentication occurs with most mailing lists. The domain model will be update to include message submission via SMPT. The model will also define technologies supporting message submission with message rules and check message rules. The model will also address rules preventing spamming, word count limitations, size of attachments, etc.

The diagram will be updated to reflect sender permissions in the list moderation rules or list sending rules depending on where the list rules are stored. Properties of rules and messages will be defined. The model will reflect built in security within activities related to check authorization. Some dependencies are implicitly available. However, some dependencies may not be just chronological. The model will be updated to include example sending rules, moderation rules, content rules, etc.. A legend will be added to the model.

The group will determine common actions and representative interface points required by mailing list software to ensure that the model is middleware enabled.

The Sympa developers can attend the Internet2 Fall member’s Meeting September 27 – 30, 2004 in Austin, Texas. For more information see http://events.internet2.edu/2004/fall-mm/. The group is seeking discussion topics for WG sessions at the meeting.

Survey drafts and the domain model are available on the WG’s website for comment.

The next call is Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at 12:00PM ET.
