*Discussion*

The RPM integrating Sympa v5.0.1 and Fedora Core v3 and v4 /extras is complete. The integration package for Fedora Core v4 /extras requires configuration and installation testing.

The group discussed possible approaches for the automated configuration of Sympa. The group decided that instead of developing an automated configuration tool, it would provide instructions on how to configure a system with a default URL, a host name for the Sympa server, the list master's email address, paths to database(s), and listmaster alias files. These instructions should address most mailing list management packages. Sympa v5.2 may address some of these configurables. The group estimates that it will take approximately 40 minutes to install and configure the RPM. The RPMs for Fedora Core v3 and v4 /extras will be made available on the WG's web site.

With regard to support and maintenance of the RPM, the RPM's developer, Craig Hancock, will support the RPM for the short term. It is anticipated that Fedora Core developers will eventually support it upon its later inclusion in the Fedora Core distribution. Should Craig be unable to continue support before that happens, then the group will request that the RPM be removed from the Fedora Core /extras package in its next release. Since Sympa is gaining popularity among US institutions, then ideally the RPM should also be made permanently available on Internet2's web site.

It has been suggested to Internet2 to host a WG addressing spam and mailing list management software. Its purpose would be to evaluate new anti-spam protocols that are being developed and how to implement the protocols in the context of a MLM. A standards draft has been presented at the recent IETF meeting in Paris addressing spam and collaborative tools including mailing list management software, thus an Internet2 WG may not be needed to address this topic yet. MACE (Middleware Architecture Committee for Education, the advisory group sponsoring and guiding the Internet2 Middleware Initiative) is open to endorsing a revised charter for this working group, addressing mailing list management software and spam, if it makes sense in light of other activities underway in the IETF or elsewhere. This has been tabled for the time being, pending further investigation.
