Spring Member Meeting
The MedMid session is April 9th at 11:00 a.m. Bill will talk about the AAMC
pilot project. Barry will talk what is happening in the UT system. Keith will
be on the panel as well.
[AI] Barry will send an outline for his planned talk to the list.
How do you avoid identity?
Bill raised the issue of inter-institutional identity where you want keep your
activities separate. An example is where a person is on staff at one place,
and a student at a different institution. The two institutions use the same
system to talk to each other. Do I want the system to know that I am a student
at College State and an administrator at State U? Shib provides privacy through
attributes that can provide identity but doesn’t have to.
In general, user id's and passwords that are sharable in any form is a bad id. The frustration is that this isn't a bigger concern and institutions are not pursuing solutions. People think integrated is better since it's easier for reporting. How do we get them to see the other side? People in general, don't put a very big value on their id and password as exemplified by the nursing station or emergency room issue where someone log's on once and the station is left accessible and open all day. UTMB – Galveston has done some great things but it's a different environment, they own everything. Their employee badge is a smart card. Building access, login etc. is keyed to the badge. This is great as long as you don't forget it. If you put enough value on it they will pay more attention to it. It's often compared to banks and ATM cards. Even though a four-digit pin isn't by itself secure, having to have both the card and the pin give good value to the system in general.
Is Liberty Alliance doing any MedMid stuff? Internet2 is a recent new member
of Liberty Alliance. They are picking up steam. The federal government recently
announced that they would work with Liberty Alliance on the egovernment initiative.
The next call is scheduled for March 20, 2003.
[AI] Steve will e-mail the list soliciting contacts at vendors that people
would like to target for involvement.
[AI] Barry will send an outline for his planned talk to the list.
