*Discussion*
A Birds of a Feather (BoF) working session is tentatively scheduled for April 19 during the April 19 – 21, Spring Internet2 Member Meeting. Meeting details are available at http://events.internet2.edu/2004/spring-mm/. Topics proposed for the BoF include:
1.) Use of AAMC Identifiers including the pilot at the University of Cincinnati
and discussions from the Group on Information Resources (GIR);
2.) Integrating electronic health records with an emphasis on the creation,
storage and access of radiology images over high bandwidth connections. Since
radiology information systems generally operate independently from other hospital
information systems, integrating their records is best accomplished using middleware
as opposed to application level enhancements. Medical Imaging and its relationship
to middleware is a topic of great interest at the National Institute of Biomedical
Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and the Biomedical Engineering Alliance Consortium
(BEACON) symposium at the National Institute of Health (NIH);
3.) Federated identity management to authenticate physicians and patients utilizing
a common identity management system to integrate hospital departments (i.e.
billing, results reporting, radiology etc.) that often have separate and sometimes
disparate systems. NMI resources within Internet2 exist to discuss and perpetuate
use of federated identity management.
The group will continue discussing these proposed topics to develop a BOF session.
Key stakeholders proposed to invite to the BoF include representatives from:
The VHA, The Project Sentinel Collaboratory project at Georgetown (http://biodefense.georgetown.edu/project-sentinel.asp),
individuals from Health and Human Services (HHS) formerly under FEMA, and now
NDMS, and possibly other groups within the public health sector.
The U. of Cincinnati / AAMC GIR pilot providing online training is now live and working for people who have already registered or register using an e-mail address. The system schema is designed to be expandable to utilize Shib and is almost ready for use by the Wisconsin Health Alliance Network. Bill requested assistance with setting up the Shib target.
The AAMC identifier self-lookup demo has been updated to incorporate comments regarding the required user fields. Additionally, if a user attempts to data mine, the demo will log out the user.
