Paul Jolly of AAMC, Senior Associate Vice-President, was present on the call and talked about the Common Biographic Records System (CBRS). The CBRS – is an identity management system and is used for connecting various databases and systems within AAMC as well as with systems of AAMC constituents.

The CBRS system is a sophisticated system for matching a unique identity and is not based on an SSN. Pieces of data used include: date of birth, institution of degree, birthplace, full name, etc. all of which are used to produce a unique AAMC id. The algorithm has been tuned for efficiency. A scoring system is used for a match. Positive scores are assigned for where data points match and negative scores where they don't match. The score is then evaluated and an overall match is determined or discarded.

Paul indicated that it may be possible to work with AAMC to assign ID numbers to new users of our system. People might also be able to look up their own AAMC identifier to help populate their directory entries.

Currently CBRS is maintained by one full time equivalent position. It would need more resources if expanded. It may be possible to find more resources from elsewhere such as a grant to set it up and expand it. Ongoing operating costs are a different issue.

There are three levels of approval at AAMC. The order of approval levels is: technical proposal, review with leaders from a policy perspective (is it within their mission), and a cost basis, business evaluation. AAMC is interested in continuing talks to explore the issues, opportunities and possible next steps in moving the discussion forward.

. The Internet2 fall member meeting Medical Middleware panel members are: Keith Hazelton, Ken Rubin of VHA, Peter Alterman of NIH and Jack Buchanan will moderate. Keith will present related middleware efforts as they relate to the medical middleware efforts of Internet2 and then solicit discussion and response from the other panel members.

There is also a Health Sciences Security Session. A brief overview of MedMid will be given at this session to inform any attendees who may not be aware of MedMid about it's existence.

The remainder of the call discussed scenarios and requirements.

The next call will be after the Internet2 member meeting.
