Carryover *Action Items*
[AI] Anyone interested in testing the feasibility of
inter-institutional collaboration on courseware via Shibboleth please
contact Dave Damassa <david.damassa@tufts.edu>.
[AI] Comments on the VistA program, especially related to identity and
access management middleware, are encouraged. Please direct them to the
list. (See mail from SteveO to the list 22-July-05 for related links).
[AI] {SteveO} will follow up with Keith about the AAMC identifier
proposal.
[AI] {Keith} will post a note to the MACE list inquiring about MedMid
related activities in Europe.
*Discussion*
The Group discussed recent developments in the MedMid pilots. {Chad}
did not have any updates for Project Sentinel. {Morgan} reported that
{Paul Jolly} is interested in finding someone to use the AAMC
Identifier, and one candidate may be Dave Damassa from Tufts.
{Steve} emailed the {MedMid} list with links to the recent NIH press
releases, regarding the launch of a major program to transform clinical
and translational science; this may be of interest to the MedMid
working group, in terms of contributing Identity and Access Management:
- NIH Press Release:
http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/oct2005/ncrr-12.htm
- New England Journal of Medicine article:

- Washington Post article:

{Jack} commented that there are some good opportunities in
translational research. He has talked with folks at U. Memphis in
anticipation of the announcement. There are thoughts of incorporating
some of Penn State’s weather-man practices into a similar medical
environment. Further discussion on this topic will follow.
Online courseware is still an item to be looked into – {Dave} is still
looking for campuses to expand collaboration efforts. {Chad} mentioned
that {Charlie} is interested in pursuing a working relationship, if
Tufts is interested in working with Blackboard course management
system. As central IT does not always support the sharing of courseware
between institutions, there are and will be those who will follow that
direction, be it on their own efforts.
{Morgan} provided an update of the planning for CAMP-Med, which is
coming up January 25-27, 2006 in Houston. The target audience is a mix
of those in the medical school who have a broad knowledge base and
those who are relatively new to the Identity Management space. There
will be a 1/2 day hands-on session to walk the attendees through the
UTHSC-Houston system, explaining how it is designed. A series of
use-cases will follow, which will allow the attendees to work on a
sample use case, develop solutions, and share how they came to those
solutions for the case. There will be discussion of the federal
perspective, some of the tools available in the Middleware space, and
what is to come in the way of future developments. The primary goal is
to support the academic medical community as they gain a better
understanding of the tools that will help them to manage the
relationships between schools, clinics, hospitals, etc. Another aspect
devotes attention to the different roles being juggled by researchers
and physicians alike. Details of the event will be sent to the list as
they are made available.
The next MedMid conference call will be on Thursday, November 10, 2005
at 2pm ET.
