Discussion
Jim has received an initial response from Qualcomm about adding S/MIME support to Eudora. Qualcomm has not definitely committed yet, but they seem to be leaning toward implementing S/MIME. Jim suggested that TAG encourage them in this direction by providing additional guidance on what should be included in the implementation. Most of the call was devoted a discussion of various features; the result is at http://middleware.internet2.edu/hepki-tag/new/eudora-smime.txt. The November 17 call will be devoted to reviewing and prioritizing this list of features.
Mark described a couple of recent projects at Dartmouth. They've built some simple tools for encrypted file transfer, and are making them available; send mail to Mark.J.Franklin@Dartmouth.EDU and he'll send you the tar file. The Dartmouth PKI Lab is working on using user credentials in the local keystore to send S/MIME email using a web browser. This is implemented with VB for IE and with Javascript for Netscape/Mozilla. It's a proof-of-concept project, and is not expected to develop into a production application. This work may also have application to signing web forms. Let Mark know if you'd like to be notified when this work is published.
