**Discussion**

- Discuss student identification needs arising from newly federated access to the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC). Cf. <https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/mace-dir/2008-10/msg00001.html>

RL “Bob” reported that there have been recent discussions with NSC representatives about this, and there is general agreement about the elements to be identified. PESC is prepared to proceed with a parallel effort developing a registry of relevant attributes.

NSC is informing the higher-ed community about its intention to move to new ways of handling student records, moving away from using SSNs in favor of other institutionally assigned identifiers or perhaps even other attributes (TBD) to identify students initially as they interact with NSC for various self-serve applications. SSNs will still be required later on in many cases since many of NSC’s interactions with students are related to student aid.

Stanford and NSC will be working on an initial pilot. A student’s IdPs will need to identify not only his/her home institution but also possibly the sub-institution associated with a student record previously sent to NSC (e.g. business school or medical school).

MACE-Dir would seem to be the logical forum in which to flesh out these requirements ongoing.

[AI] (RL “Bob”) will investigate the Stanford/NSC interactions further and report back to the group.

- Wrap up creation of latest batch of surveys

. group usage survey

<https://spaces.internet2.edu/display/macedir/Survey+on+Group+Usage>

. survey on handling of test/training/admin accounts

<https://spaces.internet2.edu/display/macedir/Survey+on+Test+Identities>

The group on the call reviewed and discussed the survey with an eye toward maximizing its effectiveness.

Information about the security of the test environment emerged as a useful element to clarify in the survey.

The Educause IdM CG mailing list was proposed as the logical forum in which to distribute the survey. The goal will be to have the survey ready by late November at the latest.

[AI] (Joy) will update the survey in the wiki based on today’s discussion, and send a “last call” note to the MACE-Dir list seeking feedback.
