Future *Agenda Topic*
- Decision on revising MACE-Dir defined attribute profile for SAML (18-Jun-07)
   * Mikael Linden, who knows about the only production uses of eduCourseMember in a Shibbed environment, does not see a problem with Scott's proposal. See excerpt from Mikael's email below agenda.
- c (country) attribute (c.f. Tom Scavo’s email, 22-Jan-07)
- Coordinating IdP practices around changes in Attribute Release Policy.

*Agenda*
1. Settling on a direction for future of eP*Affiliation
    * selective expansion of controlled vocabulary (applicant, library walk-in (vs. library patron)?
    * principle of "institution-level definitions"?
    * opening vocabulary (to URI values, to any values)?
    * Target: a proposal to be vetted widely
2. Initial review of eduPersonEntitlement
    * uses in the field
    * good/best practices
3. When should we use affiliation, when entitlement and when group?

*Discussion*

{Keith} led the Group through a broad discussion of the use and future of eduPerson*Affiliation and eduPersonEntitlement. There is much concern over how eduPerson*Affiliation should be used.

In the UK, there is much interest from Eduserv, as they are interested in continuing to use a familiar attribute, eduPersonAffiliation. {Keith} discussed with them the possibility of having eduPersonAffiliation library patron, which could be expressed by 1) library walk-in (or member?), and 2) eduPersonEntitlement common lib terms, designed to cover entitlement expressed that you should get, rather than an affiliation. The large Service Provider prefers the former option, as asking vendors to support more attributes amounts to more money. Interoperability is a major consideration in deciding whether to accept the consequences of using specific terminology that differs from mainstream methods.

{Tom} agreed that librarians do not consider walk-ins as patrons. The Group discussed the need for a term that would please Librarians, as well as fit functionally into eduPerson values. They also discussed whether standard semantics could help distinguish between applicant and a library walk-in versus an actual patron or member. Not everyone agreed that these terms would clarify the concerns voiced, and there was further debate as to whether it was likely that the Library administration would agree with the use of the terms. Librarians often consider anyone in their database as a patron, which conflicts with the view that a patron ought to have a higher level of affiliation with the university. Some felt this terminology ought to be left to the local campus for actual use of these terms, though the definitions themselves could be standardized.

{Tom} pointed out that when discussing eduPersonEntitlement, the scope is determined by the community that buys in. In considering buy-in, perhaps they ought to look at the process of arriving at a term.

[AI] {Keith} will open the call’s discussion to the mailing lists on the proper way to express entitlements. For more information on the eduPerson spec, see < http://www.nmi-edit.org/eduPerson/internet2-mace-dir-eduperson-200604.html >.

{Joy} asked whether if there has been conversation about multiple groups for library users, e.g., walk-in, staff, faculty, resident (with netID), resident (without netID). This question will be addressed in future discussions.

The next MACE-Dir Working Group call will be held on Monday, July 30, 2007 at 4:30pm EDT.
