*Discussion*
Keith asked MACE's approval to move three MACE-CourseID documents to final status and incorporate them into NMI-R7, currently planned for later this spring. See the eduCourse data model, globally unique identifiers, and LDAP documents at http://middleware.internet2.edu/courseID/. Once these documents are approved, MACE-CourseID will become dormant until its participation in real-world deployments is needed.
Recent meetings:
- EuroCAMP was a success; presentations are at http://www.terena.nl/tech/eurocamp/programme.html. There were about 100 attendees, mostly from universities, and much lively discussion. Ton noted that Lynn McRae's talk was particularly well received. There will almost certainly be another EuroCAMP next year, and possibly sooner than that.
- TF-EMC2 held its second meeting Feb. 16-17; see http://www.terena.nl/tech/task-forces/tf-emc2/.
- CAMP Med drew about 70 attendees, including many campus and medical-center people and a representative from caBIG (http://cabig.nci.nih.gov/). Some follow-up meetings are expected. There's lots of interest in medical middleware, creating possible resource issues for MACE. Internet2 Health Sciences Initiative lead Mike McGill is looking into doing an "architectural bake-off", the idea being to give people from the health sciences community a closer look at the various MACE middleware products available for their use. [AI] Tom will try to get more information on the fuzzy ID-assignment algorithm discussed at Med-Mid, with a view to having a more detailed presentation at Advanced CAMP this summer. Materials from CAMP Med are at http://www.educause.edu/Proceedings/6309.
- Bob noted an interesting discussion at IETF this morning, about a spoofing DNS attack based on a Cyrillic "a" that looks identical to a Latin "a". See the APPAREA minutes and IDN slides at https://datatracker.ietf.org/public/proceeding_interim.cgi?meeting_num=62.
Upcoming meetings:
- eduRoam was a particular focus at EuroCAMP; a two-day technical follow-on meeting is in the works, to be focused on making this a global service. Mark noted that there are a lot of network people who haven't heard of eduRoam, and others who have but still don't want it. Steve Carmody noted that it's not the network people but the identity management people who really feel the pain of not having something like eduRoam. [AI] All who are interested in helping evangelize eduRoam will contact Mark. See http://www.eduroam.org/ and http://www.terena.nl/tech/task-forces/tf-mobility/.
- The program for the Spring Internet2 Member Meeting is coming together; see http://events.internet2.edu/2005/spring-mm/. Renee expects 12-15 sessions total on middleware and security.
Bob noted that Ken has raised the prospect of a MACE-branded organization that would bring Ken together with his counterparts in other countries to coordinate work on policy and marketing issues. This has largely been motivated by discussions with the Europeans and Australians. Although there are lots of questions about how this would be organized and labeled and how it would affect MACE's existing work, Bob expressed his approval of the concept. [AI] All will send Bob their thoughts on coordinating international policy and marketing work.
Shibboleth now has a wiki (https://authdev.it.ohio-state.edu/twiki); editing the site requires membership in the InCommon, InQueue or SDSS federations. If successful, the site may serve as a prototype for other MACE wikis; [AI] All will send Scott their feedback on the Shibboleth wiki. Bob noted that the wiki has a good introduction to Shibboleth trust management (https://authdev.it.ohio-state.edu/twiki/bin/view/Shibboleth/KeysAndCertificates), a subject which has been much discussed on the Shibboleth list lately.
Finally, the group discussed the current controversy around OASIS patent policy; see http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20050222131432302. There was general agreement that it would be good to get Internet2 to weigh in on this issue.
