- Catalyst
June 23-27, 2008, San Diego CA
http://www.catalyst.burtongroup.com/na08/
RL "Bob" attended. The InformationCard Foundation (informationcard.net) has been announced, but there is not much activity yet. They are anxious to find “real applications”…
There was a presentation by INCITS (InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards - incits.org), which is an ANSI-recognized standards body which is working on a set of standards around access control expressions, different from XACML. They are focused on the exchange of access control information between organizations and applications. The Open Role Exchange Forum OpenRoleExchange.org is also working on related areas.
The Burton Group is ramping up to support federated access to their services. There are anecdotal reports of some large campuses insisting upon this as a requirement for renewal of their contracts, with all of their analyst service providers (i.e. not just Burton).

- Feb 2009 CAMP
Tempe, AZ, Date/Topics TBD
More on this will be forthcoming as info is available. There was some discussion of potential topics, including a more management-oriented focus building upon the upcoming AACRAO meeting. IdM for student services (or another particular specific area) was suggested as an example. Outsourcing/Cloud Computing was another suggestion.
Federated outsourced services was mentioned as an area that is expanding, and the Camp topic could include the related interplay with FERPA and the need to provide various attributes to external service providers. The upcoming Supercomputer Policy and Law conference is also addressing some of these topics related to FERPA.
Other suggested themes include:
- Cyberinfrastructure, perhaps focused on research support
- Portfolio applications
**Discussion**
* eduPerson revision last call
The MACE-Dir working group has submitted a new revision of the eduPerson (200806) schema for final MACE approval.
(removed subsequently and final version now available at http://www.nmi-edit.org/eduPerson/internet2-mace-dir-eduperson-200806.html)
Please direct comments to both the MACE and MACE-Dir mailing lists in the next week.
[AI] (RL “Bob”) will send a note out to the MACE list noting the final week for comment pending final approval.
- NIH organization attribute
There has been recent discussion among InCommon participants and the MACE-Dir working group about NIH’s requirements for attributes representing affiliation beyond campus, e.g. departments or institutes. Work on this is continuing, and will likely involve research administrators as well.
NIH is only expecting the top level name of the institutions initially, but later may reflect back their internal values about affiliation which may affect intracampus integration issues. Ultimately improving the business processes is the goal, as it relates to grant administration.
This would likely take the form of NIH defining and administering a NIH-specific namespace of organization URIs which would include both top level universities and lower level subgroups. There is some question as to how the NIH work might reflect actual organizations within campuses.
It is not clear how this activity might impact or interact with grants.gov in the future. Consensus seems to be forming around the approach of taking a lightweight approach to this on our end and let NIH sort out how this will develop over time.
- Federations and Liberty Alliance
The REFEDS steering committee is circulating a proposed charter for a SIG within the Liberty Alliance on interfederation. Healthcare, telecommunications, and the auto industry are potential areas of interest in addition to R&E.
- PerfSonar federated access
Note the recent mail Ken forwarded to the MACE list on this topic, comments welcomed and encouraged. Separating IdM from instrument management is the driver for this discussion.
- Internet2 Governance update
The strategic plan will be taken up at the next board meeting this week. Tactical planning is the next phase, following the approval of the strategic plan by the board.
AMSAC is interested in arranging a call with MACE in the near future, perhaps late Summer.
