The 6th Annual PKI R&D Workshop took place April 17-19; see http://middleware.internet2.edu/pki07/proceedings/. OASIS has relaunched its PKI efforts under the banner of IDtrust (http://www.oasis-idtrust.org/).
The group discussed developments at the Internet2 Spring Member Meeting:
- NIH is moving forward with federation in a serious way. Georgia Marsh's presentation was of particular note; watch http://events.internet2.edu/2007/spring-mm/sessionDetails.cfm?session=3184&event=267 for the slides. Bob noted that there are over 9,000 organizations in the NIH eRA Common database (http://era.nih.gov/userreports/ipf_com_org_list.cfm).
- Bob noted that there was strong interest in InCommon, including from the Europeans present.
- Steve Carmody noted that the middleware sessions seemed larger than in the past, with discussions driven less by MACE evangelism and more by people from the campuses talking about things they want to do.
- Ann noted that there were several requests for more clarity on how all the pieces of middleware fit together. This is related to the larger question of outreach to the thousands of US campuses whose middleware concerns tend toward basics like how to move information into directories. There was general agreement that MACE needs to give more thought to outreach. Ann is launching a discussion on the MACE list, and Bob suggested dedicating a few calls to this topic.
- Bob's big-picture talk was well-received; see http://events.internet2.edu/2007/spring-mm/sessionDetails.cfm?session=3194&event=267.
All are encouraged to spread the word about the June 25-29 CAMPs in Portland, Oregon (http://www.educause.edu/camp072 and http://www.educause.edu/camp073).
Ken is revising the draft charter for mace-collab-core. He noted that this group will not limit its scope to federated identity, and will use a broad definition of collaborative applications, in particular including both synchronous and asynchronous apps.
Ken is also working on a proposal for a workshop on workflow to take place this fall.
