*Discussion*

Ken opened the meeting by noting that the Sept. 12-14 CSG meeting looks like it will be the biggest ever; he attributes this to widespread interest in the planned discussion of the relationship between Shibboleth and PKI. MACE will meet on Sept. 11; hopefully representatives of Microsoft will be present.

Most of the meeting was devoted to project updates.
- IBM has officially recommitted to doing coding for Shibboleth, and has assigned a lead programmer; probably some of the coding will be done by the campuses with support from IBM. The London School of Economics and Edinburgh University have agreed to be Shibboleth pilot sites. Steven's top priority now is to finalize the Shibboleth documents. [AI] Steven will work with programmers at IBM to firm up the timeline for Shibboleth coding. [AI] Ken will contact Mark Simpson at IBM about the timeline for Shibboleth coding. Ken introduced work he's been doing on generalizing the idea of Club Shib to multiple "trust communities", which he's calling "tribes"; Ken will present this work at CSG. Michael is hoping that the use of the bridge model will enable Club Shib to scale; he noted that JDK 1.4 -- now out in beta -- is bridge-aware.
- HEBCA is moving forward; launch at the end of September looks likely.
- The DoDHE group is waiting for the new version of Metamerge before doing further architectural work; they are working to get more schools involved with DoDHE user-interface issues. Ken noted that many of the deans he's talked to about DoDHE are more interested in the privacy sophistication attached to the project -- being able to hand over attributes without handing over identity -- than in DoDHE itself.
- In VidMid, Tyler Johnson and Albert School have been working with Michael on directory services for H.323 videoconferencing. [AI] Ken will work with Michael to set up a meeting with Tyler Johnson and Albert School about directory-enabling H.323. Michael asked if Internet2 OIDs could be made available for this work; [AI] Ken will let MACE know what he finds out about the rules for allocating Internet2 OID arcs, and will work with Mike LaHaye to ensure that Internet2 gets an OID registry set up.

Ken asked the group for its thoughts on the idea of creating "eduOrg", an object class which would hold institution-wide information, e.g., a pointer to a school's authentication practices. Reaction was positive; [AI] Ken will make the case for an eduOrg object class to MACE-Dir.

As there will be a face-to-face MACE meeting in Seattle on Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Monday, Sept. 10 MACE conference call is cancelled.
