*Discussion*

The University of Alabama at Birmingham has secured NSF funding for a project entitled "NMI Enabled Open Source Collaboration Tools for Virtual Organizations"; see http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~jgemmill/Research_Grants/research_grants.html. PI Jill Gemmill described the aims of the project as both 1) to NMI-enable some common open-source collaborative tools -- stripping out their authN/Z pieces and replacing them with NMI-compatible pieces -- and 2) to explain to others how to do this, enabling them to NMI-enable whatever collaboration tools they happen to be using. The group discussed how MACE could contribute to this effort. It was agreed to form two new working groups: MACE-mailinglists and MACE-WebDAV. These working groups will choose a specific mailing list manager and WebDAV system to be NMI-enabled, and will investigate the issues involved in NMI-enabling these types of tools more generally. [AI] Michael will send Jill the I2IM announcement to use as a model (along with the I2IM charter at http://middleware.internet2.edu/i2im/) in launching the MACE-mailinglists and MACE-WebDAV working groups. [AI] Jill will make developing a survey of what applications people are using, and what features they'd like to see, the first project for the MACE-mailinglists and MACE-WebDAV working groups.

MACE continued its discussion of plans for middleware diagnostics work. It was agreed that this group will not work on privacy issues in the first year, but that it must be very conscious of these issues from the start, and will state its understanding of these issues early on. [AI] Jill will send MACE links to work on monitoring systems at San Diego, PSC, and DoE, that the middleware diagnostics effort may be able to make use of. [AI] Steven will ping Walter about participating in the middleware diagnostics steering committee, and will participate himself (at least at the start). [AI] Ken will send Steven nominee(s) for the middleware diagnostics steering committee. [AI] Michael will talk to Bob Currier about participating in the middleware diagnostics steering committee. [AI] Scott will participate in the middleware diagnostics steering committee, with the understanding that he can't put much time into it. [AI] Chas will work on a charter for the middleware diagnostics working group, using the I2IM charter as a model; Bob will help. [AI] Chas will organize an initial conference call for the middleware diagnostics steering committee, with the goal of formulating an initial list of tasks for the middleware diagnostics working group, to be discussed at the diagnostics BoF at the Internet2 Member Meeting.

Project updates:
- The Mellon Foundation has agreed to fund both Chandler and LionShare. [AI] Steven will see if the LionShare proposal (minus the budget) can be shared with MACE.
- JISC is going to become an NMI partner, focusing on virtual organizations and DRM; they will be building a Shibboleth-based federation. Ken noted a need to clarify use cases for the virtual organizations work; Steven noted that Alan Robiette will be at the Internet2 Member Meeting in Indianapolis.
- The OKI/IMS/MACE group has had its third conference call; Ken is trying to steer the group to "narrow down the scenarios and anchor them with details."

Upcoming meetings:
- Ken noted that Larry Ellison is creating an alternative Grid standards group; this will probably be a big topic of discussion at GGF9, along with federations and AuthZ.
- There will be three CAMPs next year. The first will be February 3-6 in Tempe, and will follow the old 3-day format; directories will be the core topic. The second and third (June 28 - July 2 and November 15-19) will follow the new 5-day format: day 1 will cover introductory material for newcomers, days 2-3 will cover a core topic from an implementation standpoint, and days 4-5 will be devoted to the Advanced CAMP research agenda. Locations and core topics for these meetings have not been chosen yet.
