*Discussion*

The discussion opened with a brief review of plans for the next release of Shibboleth. The current version is available at http://shibboleth.internet2.edu/release/shib-v1.1.html; [AI] Steven will send Ken a target date for the Shibboleth 2.0 release by the end of this week. [AI] Steven will verify that Penn State's WebAssign deployment is now using Shibboleth 1.0 or better, so that support for 0.7 can be discontinued.

The group discussed plans for the launch of the InQueue and InCommon federations. Web sites for both are in the works. The first InCommon policy meeting is tomorrow, chaired by University of Chicago CIO Greg Jackson. The USHER (US Higher Education Root) CA, formerly the CREN CA, will be the trust root for the InCommon CA; [AI] Ken and Neal will meet in Boulder next week to discuss plans for the USHER CA. PingID (http://www.pingid.com) is interested in using its Federation Manager software to support Shibboleth. The group reviewed the timeline for the launch of InCommon, concluding that the biggest issues to resolve are pricing, identification and authentication procedures for enrollment, and figuring out how formal the CP needs to be. Most of the technical pieces of InCommon are in place. [AI] Steven will find out if and when JSTOR can be ready to participate in the launch of InCommon.

Jim and Renee reviewed developments at last week's Higher Education PKI Summit (http://www.educause.edu/netatedu/events/pki03/). The University of Texas Health Center deployment, now in its fifth year, continues to be the standout. UT is using VeriSign certs; the University of Alabama is planning to do likewise with its deployment, but the University of California is pulling back from VeriSign for financial reasons. Renee observed that using VeriSign is more likely to provide an advantage when starting from scratch, as UT did, than when building on existing infrastructure, as Penn State is doing with its Kerberos-based PKI. Jim noted that UT is using the Rainbow iKey token (http://www.rainbow.com/partners/rainbow/products_ikey.asp). Dartmouth has been working with Sympa (http://www.sympa.org); [AI] Steven will ping Sympa about adding support for PKI and Shibboleth to their product. Peter Alterman spoke well of the form-signing software that Infomosaic (http://www.infomosaic.net) is providing to the Federal Government. Alterman also noted that Government use of smartcards now includes authentication of sailors reporting for shipboard duty. HEBCA has formed a Board of Instantiation and Development (BID) to push forward the deployment of the higher-education bridge CA; see http://www.educause.edu/hebca/. [AI] Renee will send MACE a note when presentations from the PKI Summit are available online.

The MACE URN Registry now has a web page: http://middleware.internet2.edu/urn-mace/. [AI] Mark will submit his MACE URN request using the text form at http://middleware.internet2.edu/urn-mace/urn-mace-request-form.txt. The charter for the Integrated Infrastructure for Instant Messaging Working Group (I2IM) -- formerly known as the Jabber WG -- is close to final, and a formal announcement is expected soon. [AI] Renee will add Neal, Scott, Steven, Jim, and Mark to the I2IM WG email list.
